10 Steps to a Flawless Polyurea Installation

Bottom wave element on the Florida Paints website

A high-performance, long-lasting polyurea floor is built on precision. While polyurea is known for its speed and efficiency, skipping steps or mixing improperly can lead to failure. The difference between an average floor and a flawless one comes down to following the full process from preparation to topcoat.

Florida Paints Flo-Coatings Polyurea systems are designed to deliver fast installation with professional results, but each step must be executed correctly. Below is the complete step-by-step process to ensure a flawless polyurea installation, including proper mixing techniques and application details.

Step 1 Use the Proper Tools

Before starting, make sure you have all the necessary tools ready for application. This includes mixing drills, buckets, squeegees, rollers, and vacuums. Having the right tools prepared ensures a smooth workflow and prevents delays once the coating process begins.

Step 2 Check the Concrete Surface

Inspect the concrete thoroughly. The surface must be fully cured, completely dry, and free of any sealers. If the concrete is not in the right condition, the coating system will not properly bond, leading to potential failure.

Moisture is a critical factor at this stage. If moisture is present, it must be addressed before moving forward to ensure long-term performance.

Step 3 Clean and Degrease the Floor

If the floor has any contamination such as oil, grease, or dirt, it must be properly cleaned and degreased. This step is especially important for older floors where contaminants can prevent proper adhesion.

A clean surface is essential for achieving a high-performance, long-lasting result.

Step 4 Grind and Vacuum the Surface

Mechanically grind the concrete to create the proper surface profile. This step is critical because it allows the coating to bond effectively to the concrete.

After grinding, thoroughly vacuum all dust and debris. Any remaining dust can interfere with adhesion and compromise the coating system.

Step 5 Repair Cracks and Re-Prep

Repair any cracks using the appropriate product. For deeper or larger cracks, use a polyurea crack filler. For smaller, superficial cracks, use a 100 percent solids crack filler.

Allow the repairs to fully cure before continuing. Once cured, grind the repaired areas smooth and vacuum all excess dust again. This ensures a uniform surface and prevents imperfections from transferring through the system.

Step 6 Mix the Polyurea Primer Correctly

The Florida Paints Polyurea Primer uses a 2 to 1 ratio, meaning two parts Part A and one part Part B.

Start by drill mixing Part A by itself for approximately two minutes to create a smooth and consistent base. If you are using a clear Part A with a color pod, add the color pod at this stage and drill mix for about two minutes until fully blended.

Next, add Part B and drill mix the combined material for approximately two and a half to three minutes. Proper drill mixing is critical to ensure the product is fully activated and performs as intended.

Step 7 Apply the Polyurea Primer

Immediately after mixing, apply the polyurea primer. Pour the material onto the floor, squeegee it out, and back roll evenly to ensure full coverage.

Polyurea cures quickly, so it is important not to leave it sitting in the bucket. The material should be applied right away to avoid premature curing.

Step 8 Broadcast Flakes or Aggregate

While the polyurea is still wet, broadcast flakes, quartz, or aggregate across the surface. This enhances both durability and appearance.

For decorative flakes, a consistent broadcast is typically achieved at approximately 200 square feet per box. Even distribution is key to achieving a professional finish.

Step 9 Scrape and Vacuum After Cure

Allow the polyurea to fully cure. Cure times can vary depending on temperature conditions.

Once the surface is hardened, scrape the floor to remove excess flakes and create a uniform texture. Then vacuum thoroughly to remove all loose material before applying the topcoat.

Step 10 Apply the Flo-Spartic Topcoat

The final step is applying the Flo-Spartic polyaspartic topcoat, which provides UV stability, scratch resistance, and chemical resistance.

Flo-Spartic uses a 1 to 1 ratio. Combine Part A and Part B and hand mix for 45 seconds to one minute. Unlike the primer, this step specifically requires hand mixing as outlined in the process.

Once mixed, pour out the material you need and apply using a squeegee followed by back rolling. One to two coats can be applied depending on the system requirements.

Allow approximately 24 hours before foot traffic. This final layer completes the system and delivers a high-performance, long-lasting finish.

A System Built for Performance

A flawless polyurea installation is not about rushing through the job. It is about following each step with precision, from preparation to mixing to final application.

By using Florida Paints Flo-Coatings Polyurea systems and adhering to the full process, you can achieve a high-performance, long-lasting floor that is built for durability, speed, and professional results
