4 Steps for a Flawless Epoxy Project

Achieving a high-performance, long-lasting epoxy floor is not just about the product you use. It comes down to preparation, process, and using the right system from start to finish. Whether you are coating a garage floor or a commercial surface, following the correct steps ensures proper adhesion, durability, and a professional finish.

Florida Paints and the Flo-Coatings system, including Flo-Poxy and Flo-Spartic, are designed to work together to create a seamless, reliable floor coating system. Below are the four essential phases that lead to a flawless epoxy project.

Step 1 Preparation Is Everything

The foundation of any successful epoxy floor is proper preparation. Most coating failures happen because this step was rushed or skipped entirely. Before starting, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials ready for application. This includes mixing equipment, squeegees, rollers, and safety gear.

Next, evaluate the concrete surface. The slab should be fully cured, dry, and free of any sealers that could interfere with adhesion. Moisture is one of the biggest threats to a coating system, so if moisture is present, it is critical to use a moisture vapor barrier activator to mitigate potential issues.

Cleaning is equally important. Floors that have been exposed to oils, grease, or contaminants must be properly degreased before moving forward. Skipping this step can lead to adhesion failure and reduce the life of the coating.

Step 2 Surface Profiling and Repairs

Once the surface is clean and evaluated, the next step is to mechanically prepare the concrete. Grinding the floor creates the proper surface profile needed for the epoxy to bond effectively. After grinding, thoroughly vacuum all dust and debris to ensure a clean working surface.

Crack repair is another critical component of this phase. Depending on the size and depth of the cracks, you can use either a polyurea crack filler for larger, deeper repairs or a 100 percent solids epoxy crack filler for smaller surface cracks. After the repairs cure, the surface should be ground smooth and vacuumed again to remove any remaining dust.

Taking the time to properly profile and repair the surface ensures that the coating system has the best possible foundation for long-term performance.

Step 3 Mixing and Applying Flo-Poxy

With the surface fully prepared, it is time to apply the epoxy base coat using Flo-Poxy. This system uses a 2 to 1 mixing ratio, meaning two parts of Part A resin to one part of Part B activator.

Start by mixing Part A on its own for about two minutes to create a smooth, consistent base. If you are using a clear resin with a color pod, this is the stage where you incorporate the color, mixing thoroughly for even distribution. Once ready, add Part B and mix the combined material for approximately two and a half to three minutes.

Application should begin immediately after mixing. Pour the epoxy onto the floor, spread it using a squeegee, and back roll to achieve an even coating. Epoxy begins curing in the bucket, so it is important to keep the material moving and applied quickly.

While the epoxy is still wet, broadcast flakes, quartz, or aggregate across the surface. This step enhances both the appearance and durability of the floor. For decorative flakes, a common recommendation is one box per 200 square feet to achieve a consistent broadcast.

Step 4 Finishing with Flo-Spartic Topcoat

After the epoxy base coat has cured overnight, the next step is to scrape and vacuum the surface to remove excess flakes and create a uniform profile. Cure times may vary depending on temperature and the type of activator used, but ensuring the surface is fully hardened before proceeding is essential.

The final step is applying the Flo-Spartic polyaspartic topcoat. This layer provides the high-performance, long-lasting protection that epoxy alone cannot offer. Flo-Spartic delivers UV stability, scratch resistance, and chemical resistance, making it ideal for both residential and commercial applications.

Flo-Spartic uses a 1 to 1 mixing ratio. Combine Part A and Part B and hand-mix for approximately 45 seconds to one minute. Unlike epoxy, polyaspartic offers more working time in the bucket, allowing for smoother application. Pour the material onto the floor, then squeegee and back roll evenly. Depending on the system, one to two coats may be applied.

The floor is typically ready for foot traffic within 24 hours and can handle vehicle traffic after about 72 hours, resulting in a durable, long-lasting finish.

Build a High-Performance, Long-Lasting System

A flawless epoxy floor is the result of a complete system, not just a single product. From preparation and repairs to base coats and topcoats, each step plays a critical role in the final outcome.

By following these four steps and using Florida Paints Flo-Coatings products, you can achieve a high-performance, long-lasting floor that not only looks great but also stands up to everyday use. When done correctly, an epoxy floor system provides durability, protection, and a professional finish that lasts for years.
