Preparing the Surface

For new garage floors, preparation is critical. While degreasing may not be necessary for a fresh slab, grinding the surface ensures optimal adhesion for the epoxy base. A clean, mechanically prepared surface allows the coating to bond effectively, maximizing durability and reducing the risk of peeling or flaking over time.

Step 1: Mixing and Applying the Epoxy Base

Start with the pre-pigmented Part A in your chosen color, such as light gray. Use a drill to mix Part A for approximately two minutes to achieve the correct consistency. Next, combine Part A with the Part B activator, for coastal properties Moisture Vapor Barrier is highly recommended. In a clean mixing bucket, mixing for two to three minutes. Once fully blended, apply the epoxy immediately using a squeegee and roller, as the product will begin to cure in the bucket.

After spreading the epoxy, broadcast decorative flakes over the surface. For this project, the Domino flake system was applied as a full broadcast, completely covering the floor. Allow the epoxy to dry for two to three hours, then scrape and vacuum any excess flakes to create a smooth, even base for the topcoat.

Step 2: Applying the Polyaspartic Top Coat

Once the epoxy base is prepared, it’s time to apply the Flo-Spartic polyaspartic topcoat. Combine Part A and Part B in a clean bucket and hand mix for 45 seconds to one minute. Pour only the amount needed for immediate application onto the floor, leaving the remainder in the bucket to extend working time. Polyaspartic coatings perform best when applied fresh and evenly, so maintain careful control during this step.

Apply the topcoat using a squeegee followed by back rolling to ensure uniform coverage. Allow the polyaspartic to cure fully before permitting foot traffic, typically 24 hours, and for vehicle traffic, approximately 72 hours. Following these guidelines will provide a smooth, long-lasting finish that protects the floor and maintains its professional appearance.

Contractor-Focused Advantages

  • Durability: Epoxy base provides structural strength, while Flo-Spartic topcoat adds chemical and scratch resistance.
  • Customizable Finish: Decorative flakes and pigmentation options allow for tailored aesthetics.
  • UV Stability: Maintains color integrity and gloss over time.
  • Efficiency: Hand and drill mixing techniques ensure consistent performance and long working times.
